Fellowship and Chartered Status for Wallwork Director

Peter Carpenter, technical director at aerospace and motorsport thermal processing specialist Wallwork Heat Treatment, is marking his 30th year with the business. At the same time he is celebrating election to Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD), and individual qualification as a Chartered Director.

"I joined the IoD in 2008 to take advantage of the training offered and have taken both the certificate and diploma courses delivered through Salford University. There are just over 1000 Chartered Directors world-wide,” Peter noted.

Peter joined the Bury based company in 1983 as a metallurgist. He became a director of the Bury and Birmingham businesses in 1992 and was involved in the selection and acquisition of Cambridge based technical coating specialist Tecvac in the late 1990’s. “There have been significant changes in the business over 30 years,” Peter explained. “We still have core customers in general engineering, but with more customers in advanced sectors such as aerospace, motorsport and nuclear there are new technical challenges, requiring the research and development of more sophisticated thermal treatment and coating processes.”

Peter initiated substantial investment in Tecvac, including relocation to a new purpose built factory, new equipment and the establishment of world class research, development and metallurgical laboratories.

The Wallwork Group is a family owned business operating form sites in Bury, Birmingham and Cambridge. The company was first registered in 1959 as a heat treatment processor and operated from premises in Stockport. The business relocated to Stalybridge in 1963, outgrowing these premises and relocating to the current Bury site in 1979.

In 1984 the company acquired its first vacuum heat treatment furnaces and in 1986 set up a foundry to produce heat resistant castings for its own use and commercial sale. The Birmingham factory was established in 1989. The acquisition of Tecvac in Cambridge, to provide a specialist coating capability, followed a decade later. Operating from three sites and with a fleet of over 40 vehicles the Wallwork Group now provides a nationwide service to manufacturers in aerospace, motorsport, instrumentation medical devices and other demanding fields.

As a private company, the Wallwork Group has always re-invested profits back into the business. This has included new plant to expand capability, research facilities to develop new surface treatment processes and investment in a skilled workforce. Services provided by the group are accredited by leading national, international and company accreditation schemes for their quality and consistency.
